30 Years of VIB: driven by curiosity, shaped by impact

In 2026, VIB celebrates its 30th anniversary. What started as an ambitious vision to strengthen life sciences research in Flanders has grown into a world-class research institute bringing together more than 2,000 scientists, technology experts, and innovation professionals across multiple research centers. 

Throughout these three decades, one principle has remained constant: curiosity is at the heart of scientific discovery. This conviction is captured in VIB’s Principia Curiosa, a set of guiding principles that reflects VIB's belief that groundbreaking advances begin with bold questions, open exploration, and the freedom to challenge established thinking. 

At VIB, curiosity is more than a mindset. It is the driving force behind fundamental discoveries, technological breakthroughs, entrepreneurial initiatives, and solutions to some of society's most pressing challenges. By connecting excellent science with technology, innovation, and collaboration, VIB creates an environment where curiosity can lead to real-world impact. 

As VIB marks thirty years of scientific excellence, their Principia Curiosa also serve as a lens through which to look towards the future. How can curiosity continue to flourish in an increasingly complex research landscape? How can the next generation of discoveries be enabled? And how can scientific excellence and societal impact continue to reinforce one another? 

These are questions that will shape not only VIB's anniversary celebrations, but also the institute's ambitions for the decades ahead.
